Reflexology for Pregnancy

During pregnancy, huge changes occur, and the body adapts to the stresses of physical change.  Reflexology might be beneficial to help maintain equilibrium during the changing balance of pregnancy.

Reflexology for pregnancy might help improve general well-being, help induce a state of deep relaxation, and help reduce the effects of stress. It may ease discomforts associated with pregnancy, and help improve vitality, circulation, breathing, digestion and sleep.  Reflexology might also help the body prepare for labour.

Specific pregnancy-related conditions that might respond well to reflexology include:

  1. Fluid retention
  2. Heartburn/indigestion
  3. Constipation
  4. Nausea/sickness
  5. Backache
  6. Sleeplessness/tiredness
  7. Urinary tract infections
  8. Headaches.

Treatments are safe during the first trimester of pregnancy.  However, it may not be advisable if miscarriage or bleeding have been previously experienced.  Reflexology is not suitable for those with pre-eclampsia, placenta praevia (low lying placenta), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
